So where is optimism to be found? How do we find inspiration when we feel the starkness of reality so deeply?

Courage
Knowing the Ideals that Guide You

The story of our lives is made up of little and large moments that define our paths and reveal who we are. There are many moments that fill us with joy but just as many moments that take away our courage challenging our perspective on life, demanding us to be positive and strong in order to persevere. We try to be realistic but the realism we experience today is skeptic of dreams and a vision for the future and even more so of ideals. So where is courage to be found? How do we shape our tomorrow without our ideals? How do we find inspiration when we feel the starkness of reality so deeply?

We tend to forget that reality is not only made up of what is tangible and immediately felt through our senses. On the contrary, we experience reality in terms of how we interpret the information we receive through our senses – we feel happiness or fear, excitement or boredom, security or insecurity.  But beyond our senses and our feelings lies something more significant for our well-being and more powerful in shaping our reality. These are the values, the ideals or ideas we have about the world and ourselves; about what is right or wrong, what is worth fighting for, what is worthy of our love.

Our ideals allow us to question our experiences, providing a better understanding of our reality, revealing the truth about our feelings, our actions and our choices. In the way honor encourages you to take ownership of your mistakes or true love gives you courage to face life’s struggles and human connections make the darkest place feel infinitely bright.

Our values, our ideals, like a compass, allow us to navigate in our journey of life, with courage, maintaining a course that gives meaning and purpose to our life.

“It is in the course of reasoning, if at all, that the soul gets a clear view of reality.
… Do we recognize such a thing as justice itself? And beauty itself and goodness too?.. Have you ever seen any of these things with your eyes?”  Plato

Your values form your inner core, the crux of who you are, the source of your courage.

Although we all experience the effects or consequences of love, courage, justice or injustice, trust or distrust in different ways, it is in our human nature to perceive these ideas, ideals, and be intrinsically drawn to them. It is this quality that unifies us, because despite our differences in age, race, gender or socioeconomic status these values remain constant in our lives. They are fixed and never changing, long lasting in the way we carry them with us throughout time. Whilst the outside world around you changes and shifts – clothes come in and out of fashion, economies rise and drop, people come and go – these ideas, these values, keep you in place.
These non-tangible human principles become the unwavering and strong roots that keep you grounded amidst the storm, give you courage to grow despite the rain and bloom in their light. It is your ideals that shift your perspective on life and have the power to change your experience of reality.

“…the body [our senses and the feelings that these produce] intrudes into our investigations, interrupting, disturbing, destructing, and preventing us from getting a glimpse of the truth.” Plato

The Rembetes and their Rembetiko music and dance are an inspiring example on how man finds courage in his ideals.

Rembetiko is a genre of Greek music born during the turbulent early to mid 1900’s.  It was created between those who worked off the alleys and corners of Athens’ ports and the Greek refugees who came from Smyrna in great numbers. The sailors, the small merchants, the laborers, the manual and unskilled workers; those who dotted the piazzas, the butcher, the grocer, the taverna waiter, all those who battled the challenges of their reality.

Rembetiko was more than just song and dance; it represented a people and a perspective on life.  A Rembetes was a disillusioned man who in his disillusionment found the courage and the dignity as a human being to strive forward, to look up at the sky in hope of escape but with feet steadfast on the ground in realization of his condition.

Their pockets were empty, their homes were small, their truthfulness looked crude but their spirit was strong, their brotherhood unbreakable and their demeanor was powerfully human. They lived in the core of their reality, accepting their place in the world while at the same time allowing themselves to hope and develop in light of the values that held them together and gave meaning and purpose to their life.

Reality is not a dry tangible experience, it overflows with quality and substance for us to perceive and interact with, to fuel our emotions and stimulate our minds, to build a promise for growth and self-fulfillment. The experience of living is full of meaning, joy, light and reason for celebration when your ideals come to shape your reality.
